Frank, Susucaru Frank Cornellisen, Nerello Mascalese, Malvasia and Inzolia
REGION: Mount Etna, Sicily
GOOD TO KNOW: Frank is a fierce proponent of “profound territorial wines”. The name Susucaru comes from a Sicilian expression meaning “they stole it” which is what Frank’s crew shouted when they realized most of the grapes from their first vintage had vanished. The estate was established in 2001, when Etna as a wine region was still undiscovered. The vineyards are located on the Northern valley of the active volcano Etna, in the oriental part of Sicily. The farming philosophy is based on the acceptance of the fact that man will never be able to understand nature’s full complexity and interactions. A recent post on Wine Searcher reported how this previously unknown wine shot to the top 20 of its most searched for list, jumping ahead of popular names.
TASTE: a “rosé” which can also be regarded as a light red, fill your palate, first with soft cherry and then a prickly peppery profile that brings in some wild flower notes
